Terms of Service
Last updated: July 2, 2026
Welcome to Garbage Sharing (the "Service"). These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Garbage Sharing app and website. By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. What Garbage Sharing is
Garbage Sharing is a free, invite-only tool that helps neighbors in Ottawa share unused garbage bin slots. The City of Ottawa limits households to a set number of garbage bins per collection; the Service lets members offer slots they don't need and lets other members claim them on a first-come, first-served basis.
We simply help neighbors connect. Any arrangement to share a slot is strictly between the members involved. Garbage Sharing is not a party to those arrangements, does not collect or handle any garbage, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the City of Ottawa or any municipal service.
2. Eligibility
- You must have a valid invite code from an existing member to register.
- You must be at least the age of majority in Ontario (18 years old) to create an account.
- You must provide accurate information and be a resident of the area you register in.
3. Your account
You are responsible for the information you provide and for activity that happens under your account. Keep your invite codes and account details secure, and only share invites with neighbors you trust. Let us know if you believe your account has been misused.
4. Community rules
When you use the Service, you agree to:
- Only post slots you genuinely have available to share.
- Honour slots you have offered, and only claim slots you actually intend to use.
- Follow all City of Ottawa collection rules and by-laws, including what may be placed in garbage, recycling, and organics bins.
- Treat other members respectfully and not use the Service to harass, deceive, or harm anyone.
- Not use the Service for any unlawful purpose or to share anything other than legitimate household waste collection slots.
5. Sharing is at your own risk
Slots are shared voluntarily between neighbors. We do not guarantee that a posted slot will be available, honoured, or suitable, or that a claimed slot will be provided. You are solely responsible for what you place in any bin and for complying with all applicable collection rules. Any dispute between members is between those members.
6. Service provided "as is"
The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure.
7. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Garbage Sharing and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any missed collections, fines, property damage, or disputes arising from your use of the Service or any arrangement between members.
8. Termination
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate access for anyone who violates these Terms or misuses the Service.
9. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the revised Terms.
10. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict of law principles.
