Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information Garbage Sharing (the "Service") collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. We aim to collect only what we need to help neighbors share garbage bin slots.

1. Information we collect

When you register and use the Service, we collect:

• Account details: your name, email address, street address, and neighborhood.
• Content you create: the slots you post (collection date, number of bins, and any notes) and the invite codes you generate or use.
• Activity: the slots you claim, cancel, or release, and related notifications.

2. How we use your information

• To create and manage your account.
• To show available slots and let you post, claim, and manage them.
• To operate the invite-only system that controls who can join.
• To notify you about activity relevant to you, such as when your slot is claimed.

3. Information visible to other members

Garbage Sharing is a neighbor-to-neighbor service, so some information is shared with other members by design. When you post a slot, your name, neighborhood, street address, and any notes are shown to other members so they can find and use the slot. Your name is also shown to the owner of a slot when you claim it. Please keep this in mind and only share details you are comfortable making visible to your local group.

Your email address is used for your account and is not displayed to other members.

4. How your information is stored

In the current version of the app, your information is stored locally in your own web browser (using your browser's storage) and is not transmitted to or held on our servers. This means your data generally stays on the device you use, and clearing your browser data will remove it.

As the Service grows, we plan to introduce a secure backend so that slots and invites can be shared across devices. If and when that happens, this policy will be updated to describe how information is transmitted and stored, and we will continue to collect only what is needed to run the Service.

5. Sharing and disclosure

We do not sell your personal information or use it for advertising. We only share information as described in this policy (for example, the slot details other members can see), or where required to comply with the law.

6. Data retention and your choices

• You can log out or clear your browser data to remove information stored on your device.
• You can cancel slots you have posted or release slots you have claimed at any time.
• You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your information by contacting us.

7. Security

We take reasonable steps to protect your information. However, no method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Children's privacy

The Service is intended for adults (the age of majority in Ontario) and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above.
